beatrice baudelaire!
my girl!
How I feel about this character: I've always been really interested in Beatrice because of how mysterious she is. Like, as a fandom we have a lot of headcanons and stuff we've extrapolated from the books and supplementary material, but on pure canon there's a lot of gaps in what we know about her that makes her interesting, especially when it comes to fans trying to fill in those gaps. And I like that she was just this super cool and super hot woman that everyone was so incredibly obsessed with no matter what side they were on, everyone and their mother had a complex about Beatrice.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: If Daniel Handler didn't want me to become far too obsessed with Lemony and Beatrice as a couple, he shouldn't have written five hundred thousand words of Lemony going "Beatrice I love you so much let me list it all" as a way to reassure her when she asks 'hey do you still love me' in the 200 page break up book she wrote. That's just insane, of course I ship it. I'm also really into Beatrice/Bertrand as a couple too, people can have multiple great loves. And depending on my mood I can be really into the lemonberryice throuple.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: Beatrice and Kit's relationship is always gonna be interesting to me, and Olaf and Beatrice just seem to have had the most fascinating dynamic, legit friends in childhood to some more vitriolic friendship and then she murders his parents and then he torments her innocent children, it's Good.
My unpopular opinion about this character: I don't know if I've got any necessarily unpopular ones because this fandom in general, and especially the bit focused on the sugarbowl generation, is very small and most of the stuff I've seen I agree with. I guess I might characterize Beatrice as a bit, idk, colder than most? For all her other facets, Olaf was someone she knew and seems to have gotten along with well on a personal level, and she still doesn't seem to have spent much time outwardly agonizing over what might have been straight cold blooded murder. I don't think she was evil or unfeeling, and there's a reason she pulled back from VFD stuff especially after having children, but there might be a more ruthless streak there in my view than in some other people's.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: idk man, that she fuckin lived? It's a bummer that she's dead, she was a devoted mother and a good friend and an important part of a lot of people's lives and it seems like a bunch of worlds were dimmer without her in them, her kids are gonna miss her for the rest of their lives and Lemony is still deeply affected by losing her literal decades after the fact. I wish she'd been able to meet little Beatrice too, I think they would have gotten along great.

After finishing Penny Dreadful a couple of weeks back, my partner wanted to watch something else with that gothic horror feel. I showed them Fall of the House of Usher and it was sooooo interesting watching it via their fresh eyes. They don't know a lot of Poe's work so a lot of the twists were actually twists to them. (Poe is one of my favourite authors so when I first saw it I could easily work things out)
It was so cool to see how much they loved it, without knowing the source material. I honestly believe that show would make Poe proud. It's the only modern retelling that genuinely captures his whole vibe.
Love it so much. I think we'll add it to the list of media we watch it every October

Ducktales day. Cloudkicker. Kit was from Talespin but in this he was aged up. Don was the main antagonist from the series. The crimes of Scrooge. Seeing Glomgold, Magicia and Ma Beagle again (The OG antagonist from the original series) having other go at Scrooge. Scrooge shouldn't be held responsible to the action of other. One more week and it will be The Finale. The Last Adventure.
I've never seen Talespin, so unfortunately a lot of these references were wasted on me, but it was cool to see them bring in stuff from an older show just like with Darkwing Duck. Really creating their own shared universe here XD.
I think I knew that Don Karnage was from Talespin. So I suppose it was always implied that there was some sort of shared universe going on.
Seeing that we're going into the final confrontation with FOWL for the finale, it's nice that we got one last story with all these iconic villains before the end, since I doubt they'll be too important for the last three episodes.
All three of them were ultimately responsible for their own actions, whatever role Scrooge may have played in things. He never held a gun to their heads and forced them to do the things they did. That was all on them.
The only one I felt any kind of sympathy for was Magica, but at the end of the day Scrooge was acting in self-defense. While letting Poe fly off was certainly callous, the twins were hardly innocent victims, and their own evil actions caused what happened.
I'm so excited! And also sad, because I don't want this show to be over. I'll just have to find more shows to watch. Already got a few ideas...

and i think this reflects the human condition so beautifully. You take something you know is doomed, going to be destroyed in all certainty and yet you inspect it, read it, try to find out some semblance of hope that no, everything will turn out fine. Your heart lit up when Strauss was waiting for the children outside. Your heart lit up when Montgomery said he knew what the assistant was up to. Your heart lit up when you realised Hector could hope. Your heart lit up at the trial, when Olaf is accused of his crimes and Strauss finally incriminates him. All through the story, your heart lit up in hopes that the title was wrong, the narrator was wrong, the narrator would review the notes to find out that the house did not indeed burn, and the Baudelaires were happy.
We look at a tragedy like a puzzle, something which could be solved with a little more inspection, with a little more hope. Maybe there was some part that they missed, that you could give back. You know how it ends, but you just hope maybe that's not really the end, because you are here now. You'll find the sugarbowl, the watch glass, hector's balloon, and the great unknown. There has to be a happy ending hidden somewhere there.
a series of unfortunate events is really the blueprint for characters doomed by the narrative like i think that series changed my brain chemistry forever… the title tells you how the story will end and the author repeatedly tries to warn you away but still you pick up the book. the first sentence is that it’s a tragedy and you keep reading anyway.. you read through the whole story and it’s terrible and tragic and unfortunate and then after you’ve stayed up late reading it under your covers with a flashlight, you go to your school library as soon as class is over and check out the next book in the series because you need to know what happens even though really, you already know. the end is right there in the title, it’s there in every page .. before the story even begins you know it’s a tragedy and you read it anyway and—

I’ve come to the realization that most people that are writing mock trial fanfiction for this case (and we are few) are shipping De la Porta with someone else.
Except for that one person on AO3 who’s doing “cops and robbers” with Kit and Poe. I kiss you <3
